A prehistoric member of the "clean your plate club" my attitudes towards food have changed a lot in the past 30 years. From a 'fat kid who loved cake' to a not-as-fat adult who loves truffle fries, I have changed my habits, attitudes, and relationships toward food. Depending on the day I love it, hate it, obsess over it, or take it for granted. I have cleaned up my act when it comes to eating and my diet, and I'm enjoying every bite. After recently completing a 45 day purify and enjoying my first “cheat meal” I can’t help but hear her smug British accent echoing in my ear. To be fair, the cheat meal was more like a “swindler weekend”, that happened to fall on a holiday weekend, so in reality it was more like “3 days of gluttony”. The cleanse program is called the Whole30 and I expect to write a separate piece about the experience: what I learned, gained, and lost… but today I want to reflect on my post cleanse roller coaster of decadence. over you know what you would miss on a very restricted diet, void of any grain, sugar, or dairy products (just to name the key players) but I was surprised at what I went for win initially. I all but passed on my husband’s chocolate mousse at our first “free” meal together, only to dive head-first into an order of truffle fries the outset chance I had later that same night. craved on the Whole30. When I walked passed a hole in the wall pizza joint during our afternoon in Venice Beach I knew our next repast needed to involve pizza in some way. But not any Dominos or buttery-crunchy crust of a Pizza Hut pie would suffice. No, I could picture the pizza I wanted: up-scale, wood oven fired, gourmet pizza with a chewy, thin crust with the right on amount of charred edges and topped with fancy cheeses and cured meats. Yes, this is what I wanted. Which I quickly found, devoured, craved again the next day, devoured again, and THEN ordered another pie to derive home for a late night snack. We went to the movies. We had been to the movies plenty of times on the Whole30 and I always packed snacks and we had a lovely time. But abruptly this movie became less about the movie itself and more about the snacks I was suddenly “allowed” to have. Popcorn and chocolate became the focus and the movie was an afterthought. After the movie a intuit of panic crept in. Oh no, it’s already Monday and our free weekend is coming to a close. Think of anything else you may want to have before you can’t have anything good at any time again. So take-out Mexican food for dinner it was.
